Established in 2001, the .NAME extension is the single TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level domains remained operational.
