More and more people use mobile gadgets to access the World Wide Web, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is steadily increasing. To fulfill this demand, the establishment that operates the universal top-level extensions, ICANN, launched the .MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the notion behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it have to comply with certain terms. In other words, all dot MOBI websites must be created to be opened flawlessly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry organization. These have to do with how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The regulations have provoked some questions given that the generic top-level domain name extension is the only one that specifies what devices ought to be able to access a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be designed in such a way as to be viewed by most web browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
